HIGH POINT, NC- First baseman Drew Mendoza drove in two runs in helping the High Point Rockers to a 3-2 win over the Charleston Dirty Birds on Wednesday night at Truist Point. Mendoza had an RBI single in the fourth and his solo homer in the sixth put the game out of reach for High Point.

High Point reliever Kyle Halbohn earned his first save since 2021 by shutting down the Dirty Birds in the ninth to preserve the win.

The Rockers (26-9) continue to hold an eight-game lead over second place Charleston (18-17) and a nine-game advantage over Southern Maryland (17-18).

After a pitcher’s duel over the first four and a half innings between High Point starter Matt Solter (W, 5-1) and Jonh Henriquez (L, 2-2), the Rockers took a 2-0 lead in the fourth when D.J. Burt singled and stole second and Ben Aklinski walked. Mendoza singled to plate Burt and Aklinski scored on a single by Jack Conley.

Charleston’s Demetrius Moorer scored all the way from first on a single from James Nelson to put the Birds on the board at 2-1.

Mendoza launched his eighth homer of the season in the sixth to give the Rockers a 3-1 lead.

Solter, the Atlantic League’s Co-Pitcher of the Month for April and May, continued his outstanding success, holding Charleston to three hits and one run over six strong innings while striking out. Jonah Scolaro retired all six batters he faced over the seventh and eight innings before yielding to Halbohn.

Halbohn saved 13 games for the Rockers in 2021, the last being a 4-3 win over Lancaster on October 9. Over the last two seasons, he has been primarily a set-up man for the Rockers closer.

Cody Wilson added a pair of hits for the Rockers while Charleston’s James Nelson had two hits including a double.

The Rockers and Birds will play the rubber match on Thursday, June 6 at 6:35 p.m. in the closing game of the three-game series at Truist Point

HIGH POINT, NC- With the game tied 4-4 in the eighth, Charleston designated hitter James Nelson hit a solo home run to give the Dirty Birds a 5-4 win over the High Point Rockers in the series opener on Tuesday night at Truist Point.

Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the eighth, the Rockers struck for two runs to tie the game at 4-4. Luis Gonzalez led off with a bloop double to left and Drew Mendoza drew a walk. Max Viera followed with a run-scoring double and Jack Conley delivered a sacrifice fly to knot the game.

HIGH POINT, NC- The High Point Rockers completed a three-game sweep of Hagerstown on Sunday afternoon at Truist Point with a 6-0 shutout of the Boxcars. The win gives the Rockers 11 straight series wins and improves their season record to 25-8, tying the 2022 club for the best 33-game start in club history.

The Rockers now own a seven-game lead over second place Southern Maryland (16-14) in the Atlantic League’s South Division.

The game started as a pitcher’s duel between High Point starter Kent Emanuel and Hagerstown’s Dominic Picone (L, 1-3). The Rockers took advantage of Picone in the first, using a double by D.J. Burt, a walk to Luis Gonzalez and an RBI single from Ben Aklinski to take a 1-0 lead.

But Picone settled down and retired the next four batters before walking Ian Yetsko with two outs in the fifth. Emanuel kept the Boxcars hitless until the third when they loaded the bases but the lefty was able to escape without any consequences.

It wasn’t until Picone left after the fifth, having allowed just two hits and two walks while striking out 10, that the Rockers were able to generate offense.

Hagerstown reliever Quinton Martinez allowed three consecutive doubles to Aklinski, Drew Mendoza and Max Viera to give High Point a 2-0 lead. Only a strong throw from Boxcars left fielder Miles Williams to cut down Aklinski at the plate prevented another run. Hagerstown then turned to Michael Saturria who allowed a single to Aidan Brewer to load the bases then a two-run single up the middle by Nolan Watson to put the Rockers ahead 5-0.

Brewer singled home the final Rockers run in the seventh as Aklinski scored after drawing a walk for a 6-0 advantage.

Burt, Aklinski, Mendoza and Viera all finished with a pair of hits for the Rockers.

Emanuel (W, 5-0) went seven innings, scattered just five hits and walked two while striking out six. Braeden Ogle struck out the side in the eighth and Jonah Scolaro put the Boxcars down in order in the ninth.

After an off day on Monday, the Rockers will be back at Truist Point for a three-game series against the Charleston Dirty Birds starting Tuesday at 6:35 pm. All Rockers fans 60 years and older will receive a complimentary ticket in honor of Senior Citizen Night at Truist Point.

Aklinski’s slam paces Rockers to win

Aklinski’s slam paces Rockers to win

May 30, 2025 by Steve Shutt

By Camden Connolly

HIGH POINT, NC- Ben Aklinski’s sixth inning grand slam erased a 3-2 Hagerstown lead and propelled the High Point Rockers to a 6-3 win over the Flying Boxcars Friday night at Truist Point. The homer was Aklinski’s 10th of the season and his 10th career grand slam as a Rocker.

With the win, the Rockers lead the Atlantic League’s South Division at 23-8, and own a 6.5 game lead over second place Southern Maryland. The loss drops the Boxcars to 6-25.

After a brief rain delay that pushed the start back 25 minutes, the Rockers’ Luis Gonzalez got the show on the road by slamming his seventh home run of the season in the first, giving the Rockers a 1-0 lead.

Hagertown’s Welington Dotel started the fourth inning with a solo homer off Rocker’s starter Erich Uelmen (W,3-1), evening the score at 1-1.  In the bottom of the fourth, High Point’s Aidan Brewer drew a walk before stealing both second and third base, which he turned into a run on a throwing error by Hagerstown catcher Isaias Quiroz, putting the Rockers ahead 2-1.

Uelmen appeared to be in trouble in the fifth when allowed a lead-off triple to Ossie Abreu. But the veteran righty was able to escape the jam with three consecutive infield ground outs.

After Uelmen allowed a walk and a single with one out in the sixth, Hagerstown’s Chris Kwitzer banged a two-run single off reliever Kyle Halbohn (W, 1-0) to put the Boxcars ahead 3-2.

Aklinski’s grand slam came off Hagerstown reliever Donald Goodson (L, 0-1) after he had walked Carlos Amezquita and Cody Wilson. After going 3-0 on Luis Gonzalez, Hagerstown opted to intentionally walk him and face Aklinski with the bases loaded. That proved to be a fateful decision for the Flying Boxcars when Aklinski hit his go-ahead grand slam.

Tommy Doyle earned his fifth save of the season with three innings of scoreless relief.

The Rockers will take on Boxcars once again Saturday, May 31, for the second game of the series at 6:35 pm at Truist Point.

NOTES: Ben Akliniski is just one stolen base away from becoming just the third player in Atlantic League history to collect 100 homers and 100 stolen bases in a career . . . Aklinski has 110 career homers in his five years in the league and has 99 stolen bases.
