All-Star OF Aklinski returning to Rockers

All-Star outfielder among High Point’s career leaders

All-Star OF Aklinski returning to Rockers

April 10, 2025 by Steve Shutt

HIGH POINT, N.C. – All-star outfielder Ben Aklinski has signed a contract to return to the High Point Rockers in 2025. This will mark Aklinski’s fourth season with the Rockers and his fifth in the Atlantic League.

“Ben has been the rock that is really the foundation of our ballclub,” said Rockers manager Jamie Keefe. “He’s a leader in the clubhouse and a leader on the field. And it is tough to quantify just how valuable he has been as a player. He is a great hitter, an outstanding fielder, and he plays the game the right way. I can’t say enough about what he has brought to the Rockers.”

Aklinski has led the Rockers in games played, at-bats, and runs scored in each of his three seasons in High Point. He holds club records for the most runs scored in a season (114) and career (301), most grand slams in a season (3) and career (8), most RBI in a season (102) and career (268), and most extra base hits in a career (156). Aklinski is among the elite Atlantic League players with two 20-20 seasons (20 homers and 20 stolen bases) and one of just a handful with a 20-30 season (24 homers, 31 stolen bases) in 2024.

A member of the Atlantic League’s All-Defensive Team in 2024, Aklinski was named to the ALPB 2023 Postseason All-Star team and the 2022 Mid-Season All-Star team.

Perhaps the most telling statistic is that in Aklinski’s 382 games with the Rockers, High Point has taken the field with a record of under .500 just once. On the fourth day of the 2022 season, the Rockers were 1-2 after dropping two of three games in the season-opening series at Kentucky. The Rockers pulled even that day with a 2-2 record and have remained over .500 in every game since, a span of 379 games.

The Rockers open the 2025 campaign at Southern Maryland on Friday, April 25 and will play their first home game at Truist Point on Friday, May 2 against the Lexington Legends.

The two-day event was held at Truist Point on Tuesday and Wednesday. Amezquita was the eighth selection in the first round of the draft.

The Rockers open their two-week Spring Training session on Monday, April 14 at Truist Point.

A native of the Dominican Republic, Amezquita played at West Forsyth High School in Clemmons, N.C. He started his college career in 2020 at St. Andrews, hitting .317. He played for the High Point-Thomasville HiToms of the Coastal Plain League in the summer of 2021, putting up a .333 average.

Rockers sign pair of MLB vets

April 8, 2025 by Steve Shutt

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point Rockers on Monday announced the signing of two more players for the 2025 season. Outfielder Luis Gonzalez and pitcher Kent Emanuel are each expected to be in camp when the Rockers open Spring Training on Monday, April 14.

Both Gonzalez and Emanuel have prior Major League experience. Gonzalez spent parts of the 2020 and 2021 seasons with the Chicago White Sox and appeared in 98 games for the San Francisco Giants in 2022. Emanuel was in the Majors with the Houston Astros in 2021 and the Miami Marlins in 2024.

“Both Luis and Kent will make their mark this season,” said Rockers manager Jamie Keefe. “Luis gives us an exceptional outfielder who is an outstanding hitter and can really run. Kent has won a slew of games as a starter and he’ll be a key ingredient in our rotation this year.”

Emanual, 32, played at the University of North Carolina and was the ACC Pitcher of the Year in 2013 after leading the Tar Heels to the College World Series. He was 11-5 in his final season in Chapel Hill and was a first team All-ACC selection in both 2012 and ’13. Last year with Miami, Emanuel made 12 MLB appearances with 12 strikeouts in 17.2 innings. The Woodstock, Ga. native was a finalist for both the Golden Spikes and Dick Howser Awards in 2013.

Gonzalez, who attended high school in Tucson, Az., played at the University of New Mexico and was a third team All-American in 2017. A third round pick of the White Sox in 2017, he made his MLB debut with the Sox in 2020. He earned his most extensive playing time with the Giants in 2022 as he hit .254 in 98 games with 17 doubles, four homers and 36 RBI. Gonzalez, 29, was at Class AAA with the Yankees in 2024.

The Rockers open the 2025 Atlantic League season at Southern Maryland on April 25 and play their home opener at Truist Point on Friday, May 2 against the Lexington Legends.

Rockers sign former ALPB batting champ

Rockers sign former ALPB batting champ

March 24, 2025 by Steve Shutt

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Drew Mendoza, a left-handed hitter who led the Atlantic League in batting in 2023, has signed to play with the High Point Rockers in 2025.

Mendoza, 27, is a first and third baseman and also plays the corner outfield positions. His .346 batting average for the York Revolution in 2023 was the highest of all Atlantic League hitters that season.

“Drew brings so much to this team,” said Rockers manager Jamie Keefe. “He’s a pure hitter who can play first or third base or either corner outfield spot. Drew not only hits for a high average, but he adds power and is outstanding at driving in runs. He will have a big impact on the middle of our line-up.”

Mendoza was a college star at Florida State, earning first team All-ACC honors and second team All-America recognition as a junior in 2019 when he led the ACC in walks and finished second in on-base percentage at .471. He played on a pair of FSU teams that won the ACC Championship and earned All-Athens Regional honors in 2019.

A native of Minneola, Fla., Mendoza was selected in the third round of the 2019 MLB Amateur Draft by the Washington Nationals. He reached as high as Class AA before joining the York Revolution in 2023.

With York in 2023, Mendoza led the Atlantic League in hitting with a .346 batting average while posting league-bests with 41 doubles and a .998 OPS (on-base+slugging). He was named a 2023 ALPB Postseason All-Star and was the first baseman on the league’s All-Defensive Team. Mendoza spent the 2024 season with Chihuahua in the Mexican League.

Mendoza is the seventh player to sign a contract with the Rockers this spring, joining catcher Chris Brady, infielders Michael Martinez and Max Viera, outfielder Gilberto Jimenez and pitchers Jeff Heinrich and Jacob Edwards.

The Rockers will open their sixth season of play on April 25 at the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs and will start the home schedule at Truist Point on Friday, May 2 against Lexington Legends.

Lefty Jacob Edwards Re-Signs with Rockers

Lefty Jacob Edwards Re-Signs with Rockers

March 19, 2025 by Steve Shutt

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Left-handed pitcher Jacob Edwards, a High Point native and graduate of Southwest Guilford High School, will return to the High Point Rockers for a second season in 2025.

Edwards tied for the team lead with seven wins last year, posting a 7-4 record with a 3.12 earned run average. He was the most versatile pitcher on the Rockers staff, regularly called on for multiple innings of relief work. Edwards struck out 63 hitters in 69.1 innings while walking just 19.

“Jacob was an outstanding starter in college at UNC Asheville and we are planning to use him in our starting rotation this season,” said Rockers manager Jamie Keefe. “But he is also a guy we can turn to in any situation on any night. He can give us multiple innings or close out a game and he has proven he can retire hitters in this league. His versatility makes him a valuable part of our staff.”

Edwards is the sixth player to sign a contract with the Rockers this spring, joining catcher Chris Brady, infielders Michael Martinez and Max Viera, outfielder Gilberto Jimenez and pitcher Jeff Heinrich.

The Rockers will open their sixth season of play on April 25 at the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs and will start the home schedule at Truist Point on Friday, May 2 against Lexington Legends.
