HAGERSTOWN, Md. – The High Point Rockers overcame an early 2-0 deficit and won the series set from the Hagerstown Flying Boxcars with a 5-3 win on Thursday night at Meritus Park.
The win pulls the Rockers back to .500 for the second half of the season at 15-15 and 44-49 for the season. Hagerstown now stands at 12-18 and 53-40.
The Rockers broke away from a 2-2 tie with a single run in the sixth and two more runs in the seventh to go-ahead 5-2.
The Rockers gained their first lead in the top of the sixth when Hogan Windish singled and Ethan Skender doubled to put runners on second and third. Braxton Davidson then hit a sacrifice fly to left to plate Windish and give High Point a 3-2 advantage.
The Rockers added a pair of two out runs in the seventh. A walk to Ryan McCarthy was followed by an RBI double from Ivan Melendez and a run-scoring single from Luke Napleton.
The Boxcars took the early lead, tallying a run in the first off Rockers starter Nick Trabacchi. Jared Carr led off the game with a double, moved to second on a single by Leobaldo Cabreara and scored on a single by Alex Isola.
That lead grew to 2-0 in the third when Isola was hit by a pitch, moved to second when Trabacchi’s pickoff throw escaped the reach of first baseman Davidson, and scored on a single by Jackson Hauge.
The Rockers tied the game in the fifth when Ty Hubbard singled and McCarthy hit his 15th homer of the year to knot the game at 2-2.
Hagerstown made it a 5-3 game in the eighth when Cristhian Rodriguez singled with two outs and scored on a triple to center by Cade Fergus.
Brayden Matthews earned the win in relief with two innings of hitless relief while walking two and striking out two. Jesse Hahn kept the Boxcars scoreless in the seventh and Ryan Chasse earned the save by setting Hagerstown down in order in the ninth.
The Rockers will travel overnight to Lancaster, Pa. to start a three-game series with the Stormers. High Point will send David Hess (5-4, 5.60) to the mound to face Lancaster’s Mat Swarmer (1-5, 6.67).
