George Greer has spent a lifetime in baseball and is considered one of the preeminent hitting coaches in the game. A former college coach at Wake Forest and Davidson, Greer has won over 1,100 career games and led Wake Forest to three ACC Championships and reached five NCAA Regionals. In the professional ranks, Greer served on the St. Louis Cardinals MLB staff in 2018 and 2019 as the club’s hitting instructor. He returns to the Rockers in 2024.
Greer served as the head baseball coach at Wake Forest University for 17 seasons from 1988 through 2004, winning three ACC Championships while earning ACC Coach of the Year honors in 2002. Greer compiled a career record of 608-382-4, a winning percentage of .614, the highest of any Demon Deacon baseball coach. He led Wake Forest to the ACC Championship in 1998, 1999 and 2001. Greer posted five straight seasons of 40 or more victories from 1998 through 2002 while reaching five NCAA Regional Tournaments and one Super Regional. His 608 career victories at Wake Forest stands as the most victories by any Demon Deacon coach and is the 10th-highest mark in ACC history.
Prior to his time at Wake Forest, Greer posted a 106-122 record in six seasons at Davidson College including a school record 25 wins in 1987. He was the 1985 Soiuthern Conference Coach of the Year after leading the Wildcats to the South Division title. Greer began his coaching career at UConn-Avery Point, winning 147 games from 1973-81 while also serving as the school’s athletic director.
Greer spent the 2006 season coaching the Mets’ New York-Penn League entry, the Brooklyn Cyclones. The Cyclones finished the year at 41-33 behind future MLB players Daniel Murphy and Cliff Floyd.
A native of Westerly, R.I., Greer was an all-state player who went on to become a two-time All-American outfielder at the University of Connecticut. He spent three seasons playing with the Chatham Anglers of the Cape Cod /Baseball League and was a two-time all-star. Greer was the right fielder on the U.S. National Baseball Team at the 1967 Pan American Games and drove in the game-winning run in a 2-1 victory over Cuba that earned the gold medal for the U.S. squad.
The St. Louis Cardinals made Greer a 17th round draft pick in 1968 and he spent four seasons in the Cardinals’ system, reaching Class AAA Tulsa in 1971. In 1970, Greer led the entire Cardinals’ farm system in RBI.
Greer returned to the Cape Cod League as a manager with the Cotuit Kettleers in 1979. He led Cotuit to three league titles in 1981, 1984 and 1985 while managing future Major League players Will ?Clark, Ron Darling, John Franco and Joe Girardi. His CCBL manging record of 213-143-21 combined with his outstanding playin career led to his induction into the CCBL Hall of Fame in 2002.
